A raw diet for dogs & puppies

When transitioning to a raw diet for dogs and puppies, a quick switch is often the best option.

Many owners can simply stop feeding the current food and swap it for our complete raw food the following day.

If you have a new puppy, we do recommend keeping them on the food they’re used to during the first week. Moving home can be stressful for a young’un, and many can become picky eaters at this time. It’s best to let them settle before making the transition to raw puppy food.

Likewise, while fresh veggies and raw meat tend to be a hit, some pooches may be resistant to change or have health concerns that need factoring in, such as digestive issues. In cases such as these, we recommend a gradual transition to a raw diet.

If needed, you can begin the transition to raw by cooking our food (if switching to our cookable range), still following the steps we outline below. Once your puppy or dog is on a full Hug diet, you can slowly reduce cooking time over seven days, until you’re serving meals completely raw (this transition may take longer, for some canines).

With puppies, once they’re ready, you can gradually introduce Hug to their current diet.
With adult dogs, start by mixing raw Hug with their current food.

We're proud to offer the best raw diet for dogs & puppies out there.

A raw diet for dogs and puppies should include a variety of proteins, where possible. Each kind of meat contains different amino acids and therefore presents a different nutritional profile.

We offer mixed proteins in both our puppy and senior ranges, ensuring our raw diets for dogs deliver a whole host of nutritional benefits while remaining suitable for specific life stage needs.

Hygiene & storage

All Hug recipes are made using fresh raw ingredients and cuts of meat that are suitable for human consumption. We do not use green tripe in Hug food, so it’s safe to handle in the kitchen and can be stored in your fridge or freezer.

Depending on how soon you would like to feed it, you can defrost Hug food in your fridge or at room temperature, keeping it cool once defrosted. The food is safe to keep refrigerated for 2 days once defrosted or cooked.

Wash your hands with hot water and soap before and after handling your pet’s food.

Ideally, defrost raw food for puppies and dogs in the fridge as this will limit bacterial growth.

Use a clear working area when preparing your raw pet food.

Our cookable raw food for puppies and dogs can be cooked in its packaging. Microwave or empty into a pan and heat on the stove until fully browned. (See our How to cook page for full instructions.)

Check its temperature before serving, then transfer to your pet’s bowl for feeding. If you prefer, it can be fed straight out of the tub it arrives and is cooked in.
