A raw diet for cats & kittens

Making the switch to a raw diet for your kitten or cat? As we know, felines can be resistant to change!

If your kitten has just moved in, we recommend keeping them on their current food during the first week, until they acclimatise. Adjusting to a new home can be stressful for a young kitten, and many become picky eaters at this time.

Felines often favour food by texture, so if you’re transitioning your kitten or cat away from dry food, the switch to raw may take a little longer. They’ll need to get used to eating softer food, and many don’t accept this straight away.

Likewise, in other instances, the shift to a raw diet for cats or kittens may stretch beyond the nine days we plan for below – it all depends on your pal. If needed, you can start by adding a smaller amount of Hug food to your feline’s usual food, and slowly increase at a pace that suits them.

Transitioning to a raw diet for cats & kittens

For cats, gradually introduce Hug raw cat food to their current diet. For kittens, once they’ve settled in, gradually introduce Hug raw kitten food to their current diet.

We’re proud to offer the best raw diet for cats & kittens.

When choosing your recipes, we recommend feeding a variety of proteins where possible. Each kind of meat contains different amino acids and therefore presents a different nutritional profile. We offer mixed proteins in both our kitten and adult ranges, ensuring our raw diet for cats delivers a whole host of nutritional benefits while remaining suitable for specific life stage needs.

Hygiene & storage

All Hug recipes are made using fresh raw ingredients and cuts of meat that are suitable for human consumption. We do not use green tripe in Hug food, so it’s safe to handle in the kitchen and can be stored in your fridge or freezer. Depending on how soon you would like to feed it, you can defrost Hug food in your fridge or at room temperature, keeping it cool once defrosted. The food is safe to keep refrigerated for 2 days once defrosted or cooked.

Wash your hands with hot water and soap before and after handling your pet’s food.

Ideally, defrost raw food for cats in the fridge as this will limit bacterial growth.

Use a clear working area when preparing your raw pet food.

Wash and disinfect all surfaces and utensils that have been in contact with raw meat.

Once defrosted, store raw Hug food at the bottom of the fridge in closed containers. As with any uncooked meat, keep it away from cooked items as well as fresh fruit and veg.

After each use, wash your pet’s bowls, dishes, and utensils with soap and hot water, rinse properly, and dry before the next use. If you’re using a dishwasher, wash using a high temperature setting.
