Coconut has been touted for years as a wonderful superfood for both humans and dogs. Amongst many other health benefits, it contains medium-chain fatty acids, which travel straight to the liver where they are metabolised and utilised for fuel – ideal for when you’re out and about.
Of course, we’re all about having everything in moderation – for pooches and ourselves alike – and sometimes certain foods aren’t suited to our needs. Coconut is quite high in fat (even though it’s a good type of fat), so if you’ve been advised to feed your dog a low-fat diet for health reasons, these may not be suitable or should only be fed in very small amounts.
Ready? Let’s get cooking!
Ingredients you need
50g sunflower seeds
50g pumpkin seeds
2 tbsp flaxseeds
2 tbsp chia seeds
50g coconut flakes
50g plain flour
4 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp carob powder
150ml boiling water
Making the seedy mix
Pre-heat the oven to 180 C.
Mix all the seeds and coconut flakes in a bowl until combined.
Mix through the flour into the seed mix and stir through 3 tbsp of melted coconut oil.
Next, add the boiling water to the mix – this will produce a more jelly-like mix rather than a dough.
Line a baking tray with a baking sheet to prevent sticking. Place the mixture on the baking sheet and roll out into a thin layer, approx 1 cm thick (place a sheet of baking paper on top before rolling as the mixture is sticky).
Bake for 50-60 mins until crispy and golden, then leave to cool.
Making the ‘chocolate’ sauce
Mix the carob powder with 1 tbsp of melted coconut oil to create the chocolate sauce – add a little more carob powder if the sauce is too runny.
Drizzle over the seeds and sprinkle some more coconut flakes on top, then pop in the fridge to set.
Cut into snack size pieces for you and your pup to enjoy.
