No-one should miss out, which is why we created our scrumptious beef burgers for dogs, so they can join in the fun, too.

These yummy snacks are topped with delicious kimchi, which we recommend making beforehand, as it needs time to ferment. Fermented vegetables are a fantastic addition to your dog’s diet, providing a natural probiotic to help with their gut and immune health. Tastes good, feels good – win-win.

If you don’t have time to let the vegetables ferment, why not whip up a coleslaw using some kefir? It’s still a great probiotic treat, but without the wait.

If your dog can’t have beef, why not try one of our other fabulous minces – whichever your pup loves the most!

These burgers for dogs are the perfect summertime meal, so have a go and tag us in your creations. We always love to see them.

beef burgers for dogs ingredients

Ingredients you need

600g Hug mince

2 eggs

200g oat flour

3 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1/2 white cabbage

1/2 red cabbage

2 carrots

1 apple

1 lettuce

*Optional* 2 tbsp kefir

Making the kimchi

Grate your apple and carrots. Shred your red and white cabbages finely.

Mix them all thoroughly in a bowl until combined and evenly mixed.

Pack your jar with the vegetable mix, pushing down on the vegetables to ensure you have really stuffed that jar tightly.

Once you’re done, add in 3 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and fill with water to the top.

Pop the lid on and leave on the side (away from direct sunlight) for a few days to start fermenting. Once you have begun using the kimchi, pop in the fridge to keep fresher for longer.

How to make summer burgers for dogs

Whisk together your 2 eggs and stir into the mince in a bowl.

Add in your oat flour slowly, mixing everything thoroughly until it is fully combined.

Now time to form the burgers!

Shape into burger-size patties – you can make these whatever size may be suitable for your dog.

You can cook these burgers on the BBQ or on the hob or even in the oven, whatever you prefer.

Cook until browned. The benefit of using Hug mince is that you can leave your burgers a little pink if your pup prefers them fairly raw or cook all the way through – both are suitable.

Now time to serve and top with your tasty kefir coleslaw or kimchi.

Serve in a lettuce bun, then sit back and watch your pooch tuck into this tasty delight (do remember to let the burgers cool before feeding).

They are un-burger-lievable!

Hug Home Comforts: Chicken bone broth for dogs https://www.hugpetfood.co.uk/hug-home-comforts-chicken-bone-broth-for-dogs/ https://www.hugpetfood.co.uk/hug-home-comforts-chicken-bone-broth-for-dogs/#respond Mon, 17 May 2021 12:10:46 +0000 http://hugpetfood.host100.co.uk/hug-home-comforts-salmon-puff-cat-treats-copy/ Bone broth is a multi-tasking wonder for pups. It cultivates a healthy gut, is super digestible, and a source of nourishing comfort for those days when they may be under the weather or just need some extra hydration. Better still, it’s chock full of the essential nutrients and minerals (like magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, collagen, and gelatine) that dogs need, aiding joint support and good immune health. Pretty great for a bowl of broth, right?

We teamed up with the Canicross Trailrunners to create this recipe, ideal for helping to get your pooch hydrated before their next run. Giving your dog chicken bone broth before and after exercise will hydrate them more effectively than a bowl of water would – they’re also likely to drink more as it’s really tasty. Win-win.

Our bone broth for dogs is ultra easy to make, freeze, and have ready for whenever you need it. If your dog can’t tolerate chicken, use any other type of bone such as beef marrow bones, pork trotters, or duck carcasses. This recipe is so versatile it can be tweaked to suit any pup.

Time to get cooking

Pop the carcasses in the slow cooker and pour over the water until all the bones are completely covered.

Add in 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar, a pinch of crushed black pepper, and 1 tsp of turmeric powder (or a 1cm wedge of fresh turmeric root).

Stir the mix until combined.

Leave to cook for 24 hours on a low setting – remember to check every so often to ensure there is enough water still.

24 hours later…

After 24 hours, lift out the carcasses and strain the mixture to catch any small pieces of bone. If there is any meat left on the bone, you can keep this to one side and feed this as a nice treat or mix with the broth itself.

Pour into a container, ice cube tray or use straight away. We like to keep a few ice cube trays filled so you can pop a few out and pour a bit over your pup’s meals when you want to give a little boost.

Store in the fridge and use within 5 days or freeze for a future date.

Bone appetit!

Want something healthy, easy to make, and delicious? Then look no further. These salmon puff cat treats are simple to whip up and act as a great, nutrient-packed snack – one your mog will find hard to resist.

This recipe is very versatile – you can use any fish your cat may enjoy, such as sardines and mackerel (we recommend avoiding tuna when possible). If your friend isn’t a big lover of fish (yes, some cats don’t like fish), you could always try making these with some cooked chicken or another type of cooked meat they favour. We have a brilliant range of cookable recipes that would work perfectly within these treats.

Have a go at making these fishy delights and share your creations with us – we’d love to see them!

Making your fishy cat treats

Preheat the oven to 200 C.

Separate the whites from the yolks of both eggs and discard the yolks (or save these and use for something else).

Whisk the egg whites using a hand or electric whisk until stiff peaks form – if you can hold the bowl upside down without the contents spilling out, this should be done (try over your head if you’re feeling brave).

Drain the salmon and blend with 2 tbsp of the whisked egg whites until a smooth puree is formed.

Carefully fold in the salmon puree with the remainder of the egg whites, taking care not to knock too much air out of the mixture when combining the two.

We worked with the amazing team at CaniCross trailrunners to create this simple, tasty energy boost for you and your pal on the go.

Coconut has been touted for years as a wonderful superfood for both humans and dogs. Amongst many other health benefits, it contains medium-chain fatty acids, which travel straight to the liver where they are metabolised and utilised for fuel – ideal for when you’re out and about.

Of course, we’re all about having everything in moderation – for pooches and ourselves alike – and sometimes certain foods aren’t suited to our needs. Coconut is quite high in fat (even though it’s a good type of fat), so if you’ve been advised to feed your dog a low-fat diet for health reasons, these may not be suitable or should only be fed in very small amounts.

Ready? Let’s get cooking!

Making the ‘chocolate’ sauce

Mix the carob powder with 1 tbsp of melted coconut oil to create the chocolate sauce – add a little more carob powder if the sauce is too runny.

Drizzle over the seeds and sprinkle some more coconut flakes on top, then pop in the fridge to set.

Cut into snack size pieces for you and your pup to enjoy.

Time to bake

Preheat your oven to 180C

Fill an oven dish halfway with the cooked mince, and make sure to include all those lovely juices.

Next, cover with the mashed vegetables, and run a fork along the top to create ridges – this will give the pie a nice crisp top in the oven.

We sprinkled some of our herb mix over our shepherd’s pie for dogs to give it an extra touch of goodness. (We have a whole range to suit your pooch’s individual needs.)

Bake for 20 minutes or until crisp and golden on top.

Make sure you let the shepherd’s pie cool down before feeding, then serve.
